Some of her earlier work was based on longitudinal data from the National Child Development Study. This was informed by her field studies and research eliciting the views of children. In 2009 she was the principal investigator of the UK National Grandparenting and Adolescent Well-Being Study funded by the ESRC, together with Dr Eirini Flouri, who was the co-investigator, Dr Jo-Pei Tan, Dr Julia Griggs and Dr Shalhevet Attar-Schwartz, who were co-researchers in that study. Prof. Buchanan was appointed to the Council of the ESRC in 2007 and in 2009 she chaired the group responsible for updating the ESRC Framework for Research Ethics.
This study may allow a better understanding of the interplay between culture and intergenerational relationships and will help fill a considerable gap in existing literature. The findings of the Israeli study will be compared with the findings of the UK National Grandparenting Study, in which Shalhevet was involved. Shalhevet was lead author in several publications in leading social work and family psychology journals resulting from the latter study. Jo Bridgeman is a senior lecturer in the Sussex Law School, University of Sussex.
